I'm not one to give up on the basics, especially when they work really well. So, I've been a dedicated Anarchie Pro user for batch files and Fetch user for more individual FTPing. And, for the most part, I've been very happy. Oh, like most Mac users I've found myself tempted by NetFinder, but it just seems to add too much overhead and too little functionality.
The problem is, they suck at doing Linux distribution downloads. It's a fact of life that there are a lot of Linux files, especially RPMs. And those files take half of forever to download, and you will have server timeouts while you do it. And that means missing files, frustration, and days of download time even over a T1. And then they might not work. This does not make people happy, least of all me. However, the Vicomsoft FTP Client (shareware version) has a synchronize folders feature that actually will force the system to reconnect and pick up where was left off not only on a failed download file, but on a failed batch file. So, it's now the synchronizer of choice for RPMs and their downloads. I'm doing a final check synchronize right now, and then I should be all set. So, with luck, LinuxPPC by the end of the day.
I was killer tired yesterday. I learned how much when I went home from work last night. Sit down, turn on TV, watch the clock magically change to midnight. Now this happens a lot, but I was still exhausted. I shook the sleep from my head, booted my computer up, started to check my mail, and... And then it was six forty-five, my alarm was going off, and I was in bed. I don't remember going to bed. Some lights were still on in my apartment. The computer was still on. So I got lots of sleep last night. And clearly needed it. I could go back to sleep right now. I think I even would, except I have class at one today, a meeting with parents after that, and an advisee meeting at lunch. Too much to do. And tonight? I drive, at least a couple of hours. The open road, by God. I don't want to, mind. But I have to. Must deposit check. It's too warm. I hate warmth. I love cold. Come on Autumn. You can do it. No really, you can. Everyone else was tired too. I know Mason napped, and Eileen went home early, and... and... and... everyone! It's the weather, clearly. I expect I'll invite Mason to stay over this weekend (at least tonight). It's supposed to be a scorcher overnight and I want to be sure he'll get a good night's sleep. Besides, we'll be up half the night anyway, if I know us. Besides, it's nice to have Mason over. Heck, now that it's not mandated, it'll be really nice. It's pleasant to have someone there, y'know? At least for a day or two at a time.
The travel schedule's popping up again. Next tuesday, it's down to Boston for my friend Flic-- er, my friend Kate, who's coming in for interviews. Mason knows her too so we're both going to head down. The following week, I'm off to Ithaca to see Frank, as well as my friend Russ. We'll also sneak up so I can see John and my Action Niece, Molly. Who, I'm told, is an excellent dancer to "I Dream of Jeanne." The latter will also mean, gasp, a couple of days off. It's a conference thing. And that's the game for today, kids. Now, to nap in my offi-- er, get some prep work done. |
