The dangers of leaving the Air Conditioner on too high when you fall asleep. It was forty degrees in my apartment when I woke up. This is a bit cool for mid-June.

A busy day yesterday. Besides the phone call early in the morning, as detailed in yesterday's entry, I took a ride out and looked at an apartment on Mason's behalf. It was in the middle of nowhere, had a landlord who would have fit in Deliverance, and was entirely done in an orange shag carpet.

It was, however, immaculately clean.

I recommended Mason take the apartment I looked at on Friday. He agreed. We are happy. He has faxed in an application to them. Or tried. Life is good that way.

Also in yesterday, Greg rode up and we worked on his computer for a while. He shared the Random House rejection letter (these were the people we were finalists in the contest for). Their points were well made and they seemed to legitimately like the story (hey, you don't do a two page critique on something you don't like). It would take about three quarter's of the book's worth of rewriting to match them, however. So, there's only so much they must have enjoyed it, I figure.

Still, it's a positive form of rejection. We'll likely do the rewrites after we see what Athenium says about it. Eleven weeks before we can pester them....

Greg and I walked the Wolfeboro mile, then drove down to Portsmouth and took in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. I was his guest for doing the computer work, which was cool. We also ate at Bugaboo Creek, which is a great place for food if you don't mind the decorations talking to you.

Austin Powers has positioned itself as "the movie to see after seeing The Phantom Menace." The funny thing is, both Notting Hill and a movie called American Pie have positioned themselves as "the movie to see after you've seen Austin Powers, which you'll have seen after The Phantom Menace." I've never seen the heated battle for Third Place before.

Austin Powers is, oddly enough, not in the least disappointing. Neither is it a drop dead must see. It's a lot of fun, and they deal with the inconvenience of his wife from the first movie in a perfectly... unique way. Kick back, relax, and enjoy it. You could likely wait for video but it's a good theater movie too. I don't see going more than once to see it, though.

Also, watch the credits all the way to the end. The fun part was watching the audience, conditioned to immediately leave when the music starts, get five feet out of their seats and lurch right back to them like a demented yo yo. The last bit was seen by maybe four people total, because people aren't smart enough to figure out that the movie isn't stopping because the credits are playing. Be smarter than they are. Stay and watch.

Today I feel moderately rested. I fell asleep in a chair last night, and somehow found my way to bed though I don't know when. I slept until one, when the coldness in the Apartment got to be too much for me. There is something cheerfully decadent about sleeping in.

Greg and I talked strategy for a while yesterday. The three of us (with Louise) have individual projects we're working on. Our thought is to continue that, along with perhaps doing individual children's books and seeing what we can do on our own for the eleven weeks we wait on Athenium for. This will give me time to work on the Ethereal Player's Guide proposal and maybe get somewhere with it, plus time to work on either my novel or a children's book. I have one in mind, so we'll see....

Updated my Essays page through to yesterday. There are now twenty-two nuggets of joy culled out of the last couple of months' entries. Let me know what you think.
